A Reference Section Through Fast‐Spread Lower Oceanic Crust, Wadi Gideah, Samail Ophiolite (Sultanate of Oman): Insights From Crystallographic Preferred Orientations

چکیده
We established a 5,000 m thick profile through the paleo lower oceanic crust of Samail ophiolite (Sultanate Oman, Wadi Gideah), in order to investigate accretion processes beneath fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges. The is regarded as best on-land analog for fast-spread crust, and Gideah allows sampling entire along bed. Here, we provide microstructural constraints crustal ridges, which reveal changing microstructures fabrics with depth. Grain size coarsening occurs from foliated layered gabbro section. A ∼350 zone gabbroic rocks top, interpreted frozen fillings axial melt lens defined varitextured gabbros, shows intergranular textures without crystallographic preferred orientations. Rocks varitextured/foliated transition (∼500 thick) upper gabbros (∼600 m) are lineated. lineation absent or very weak underlying ∼800 gabbros. In fabric gradually strengthens becomes more lineated down section local scattering at small spatial scales. This implies distinct mechanisms deep shallow plutonic crust. For our data suggest in-situ crystallizing individual magma reservoirs. Dominant suggests vertically transported crystal-laden melts mushes being consistent subsiding crystal lens, and/or upward migrating expelled mush beneath.

Fossils of hydrothermal vent worms from cretaceous sulfide ores of the samail ophiolite, oman.
Fossil worm tubes of Cretaceous age preserved in the Bayda massive sulfide deposit of the Samail ophiolite, Oman, are apparently the first documented examples of fossils embedded in massive sulfide deposits from the geologic record. The geologic setting of the Bayda deposit and the distinctive mineralogic and textural features of the fossiliferous samples suggest that the Bayda sulfide deposit ...
متن کاملGeochemistry of gabbro sills in the crust–mantle transition zone of the Oman ophiolite: implications for the origin of the oceanic lower crust
Ž . Gabbroic sills intruding dunite in the crust–mantle transition zone MTZ of the Oman ophiolite have textures and compositions very similar to those in modally layered gabbros that form the lower part of the gabbro section in the ophiolite, and different from those in non-layered gabbros near the dike–gabbro transition. The presence of gabbroic sills in the MTZ indicates that modally layered ...
متن کاملCoexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
متن کاملGeological and Geochemical Controls on Subsurface Microbial Life in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Microbial abundance and diversity in deep subsurface environments is dependent upon the availability of energy and carbon. However, supplies of oxidants and reductants capable of sustaining life within mafic and ultramafic continental aquifers undergoing low-temperature water-rock reaction are relatively unknown. We conducted an extensive analysis of the geochemistry and microbial communities r...
متن کاملVariation of cooling rate with depth in lower crust formed at an oceanic spreading ridge: Plagioclase crystal size distributions in gabbros from the Oman ophiolite
[1] Abstract: Analysis of crystal size distributions (CSD) of plagioclase in gabbros from the Oman ophiolite indicates that cooling rates in the lower crust beneath a mediumto fast-spreading oceanic ridge did not vary smoothly with depth. Cooling rates in the upper half of the gabbro section were approximately 1.5–2 times faster than in the lower half of the gabbro section during igneous crysta...
